The Japanese table bbq was developed in the 18th century. Initially, this Japanese charcoal bbq was not yet used as a grill, but as a heating appliance. Over time, it was discovered that this grill could not only serve as a heating appliance, but you could also use it perfectly to prepare Yakitori and other foods. Thus, the Konro Grill was born. This Japanese table bbq is made of diatomaceous earth, a material that can withstand extreme heat very well and holds it very well. Because the grates of the grill are fixed just above the charcoal, the juice of the meat drips into the grill and evaporates very quickly. Because this allows the vapor to soak into the meat, you get a great BBQ flavor to your meat.

The Konro grill is a special grill. That means you also need a special charcoal to use it properly. Namely Binchotan charcoal. This special charcoal is made from the Ubame oak tree. A tree that only grows in Japan. Binchotan charcoal is therefore only produced in southwestern Japan. Here the locals make the charcoal by hand in large clay kilns. Then the moisture is pulled out of the wood very slowly, making the wood very hard. As a result, this charcoal burns much longer than any other charcoal.
